BEAUTIFUL HARTEBEES

HARTEBEES

I know I am behind on my blog of our travels before arriving at our bush home, but like to blog as things happen here.  Two Hartebees live very close to the cottage.  I am not sure if its a male and female or two males.

At about 12 pm one of them came hightailing down the valley obviously distressed.  Came down to the cottage.  I could see something was wrong, it was frightened.  It hid in a little area near the cottage.  Me grabbing my camera ran to see what was going on.  They are always two together but one was missing.  Know they are not afraid of the Bouvs.

The two new rescue Bouviers made an awful noise, something I have to work on. Training them to be quiet.  Zeus, Babushka, Cola and Grandpa understand this now.
Eventually it came out of its hiding place came across in front of the cottage over the lunging ring and stood looking up the valley for  a while and then  lay down, obviously very tired.

Zeus and Babushka do a lot of patrolling for snares with me.  So have learnt not to chase wildlife, well certain wildlife.  When it comes to Baboons, Vervet monkeys and Warthog its a problem.  Zeus had a altercation with a Baboon and Babushka with a Warthog but that is a story for another day.

Snares poachers leave to catch game huge problem.  The horses here are no exception.  Above poor old Storm caught in a snare.  Below Zeus and I on snare patrol.  Please understand that Zeus needs more training with wildlife, we working on it.

Video below of the rescue hooligans.  They are in training.

Below a video of this beautiful Hartebees.  I still don't know what happened :(
It was here for over an hour and then left.  Have not seen the other one but will keep you updated.  Oh and please excuse the washing this is bushlife.

You all know why I am doing this blog.  Sharing some of my personal life.

VISIT IN STILBAAI

We had a wonderful rest in Stilbaai sleep late in the morning.   Visiting little quaint shops.  Well needed rest after packing up in Port Elizabeth, you know when you move how much work is involved.

We spent many wonderful hours at the Lagoon with the dogs.

Days we did not go to the beach were spent at the flat just lazing about enjoying our break.

Before leaving Port Elizabeth, Cola had, had a three days of seizures while Bertie was in Nigeria,  It was awful, just awful.  She was having seizures about every two weeks and I was so stressed.  Even with friends around you are alone when you have a dog that suffers from Epilepsy.  She eventually landed up at Walmer Veterinary Hospital in Port Elizabeth.  The prognosis was not good.  We had to make a decision.

I just could not let Cola go.  We decided to give it one more chance.  I had prayed for Cola many, many times.  While watching her body contort during a seizure. Wetting herself and after the seizures (clusters)  after effects of pacing for hours.  It truly is heart wrenching to watch helplessly.  We changed her meds and decided no matter what we where taking her with.  During our stay in Stilbaai she had a small grand mal.  Photo below of Bertie laying with Cola after the seizure.

Last Beach days before leaving for Cape Town.

Then it was time to move on to Cape Town to visit with my daughter and son.

Thank you Stilbaai for a lovely stay.

TODAY IS BABUSHKA'S 9TH BIRTHDAY

What can I say.  I adopted you 6 years ago.  You were nervous suffered from separation anxiety, and did not like all men.  I did obedience with you, did protection work with you, did carting with you and we have had so many adventures together.

You are my heart!  I love you so deeply it hurts. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY BEAUTIFUL RESCUE BOUVIER.

STILBAAI COASTAL TOWN

So after a late start out of Port Elizabeth on the 5th May 2016 and travelling in heavy rain we arrived in Stilbaai at about 9pm that evening.  The visibility on the road was awful and we were all knackered.

For those who don't know Stilbaai, it's a lovely little coastal town on the Southern Coast of South Africa.  Very popular destination for many South Africans holiday time.  Has lovely beaches and lagoon.  Pretty little town "also known as the Bay of Sleeping Beauty"

As you can well imagine the dogs and Sir Peanut where very confused about what was going on.  We settled in, in the holiday flat which belongs to Berties parents.  After a lovely meal we just hit the sack.

Grandpa Moses above sleeping all cozy the next morning after breakfast,

We decided to visit and enjoy the lovely company of my inlaws who did not mind the dogs running around on their property for a couple of weeks.  Some evenings when we did not go down to the lagoon we would go for a walk and we were stopped numerous times by some of the residents asking us what breed of dogs the Bouviers where.  Very well behaved the Bouvs enjoyed all the attention and of course Grandpa Moses weighing in a 4kg happily walking with the giants was found to be very amusing  lol

Above the Bouvs enjoying the deck.  Happy to be out of the Bouv Wagon and exploring their new surroundings.

Above Sir Peanut was confined to the holiday flat and not impressed at all about it!  He made such a racket when we left with the dogs and he had to stay behind. When we went for walks in Port Elizabeth he always accompanied us.  Now he could not understand why he was not allowed.

KEEP TUNED FOR OUR NEXT POST MORE OF STILBAAI

COBRA

So it's about 4:30 pm and I am washing some spinach for dinner.  I am jumping ahead in my blog but it happened about half an hour ago and this is life in the bush.  Anyway washing spinach and my husband comes in " there is a snake at the front of the cottage gate".  Lucky all the dogs with me in the house.  He runs out with the broom to stop it from coming through the gate!

I close the door to keep the dogs inside.  Bertie comes rushing in the Spitting Cobra had got him in the eyes numerous times.

Where's the snake? I shout it's gone.  I grab a litre of milk and we start flushing his eyes out.  I phone my brother in law my hubby on his way to the hospital now.

Now I am waiting I do hope my hubby is going to be ok.

Nasty piece of work this.  I hate snakes.  Will keep you posted.

Well Bertie ended up at the emergency outpatients ward.  The milk saved his eyesight.  You can also use it for dogs and other animals.  It is very painful.  His left eye was more affected than the right one and we think that is because of his head on collision in 2005 in which the eye was damaged.

Why the snake tried to come through the fence onto the stoep is a mystery.  Bertie a hero because he saved the dogs.  Below some more pics of this kind of Cobra.

Jacko the likkewaan lives here and they eat snakes.  Jacko I hope you catch this guy that did this to Bertie.  Below pic of Jacko a likkewaan who lives around the cottage.  We see him at least once a week.

GO GET HIM JACKO

Pics of Berties eyes.

I WANT REVENGE JACKO GO GET HIM!

ON OUR WAY TO A NEW LIFE!

Everyone loaded and ready to go.  First stop Stilbaai to spend a couple of days with my husbands parents.

It absolutely poured with rain all the way down to Stilbaai.  Making travelling difficult.  Wet roads in some places zero vision and Sir Peanut not happy with being in a traveling box.

The weather did not help with the pit stops for wees and poops. lol

LEAVING PORT ELIZABETH

Having to leave Suburbia living in Port Elizabeth  in February 2016 after the company my husband worked for liquidated,  our whole lives changed when we moved to Buffelskop Conservation Farm.  Renting a tiny little cottage in the bush, with our then only 4 dogs.  Three Bouviers and a small little pavement special we call Grandpa Moses.

All 3 my Bouviers had competed in obedience classes and carting.  Zeus and Babushka had done personal protection work.  Overall I would say they did pretty well.  The only very sad part of this is that Cola my one Bouvier started getting epilepsy at the age of 3.  An illness unless you have experienced it is life changing, stressful and very sad.

Although I miss my friends and dog training the saddest part was leaving Sir Peanut behind.  Our black cat, who we were worried would not make it in the bush.  So thankful we did not bring him as I really don't think he would have survived here.

Sir Peanut.  I do miss your kingly presence in the home and your fearless antics with the huge Bouviers. lol  Sir Peanut is safe homed with my daughter in Cape Town, where he is now the King of that part of suburbia.

One thing I am really happy I did was doing personal protection with my two big Bouviers Zeus and Babushka.  At the time it was fun, but living where we do now I feel so much safer and I know my dogs are empowered to protect themselves and me.
